Quick PSA for those researching and shopping around to replace the silly OEM tires. TFL’s review on the Falken Wildpeak AT4w tires must have been completely flawed. I am running stock size 20s in Standard Load. I have had them in 8-10inches of fresh powder, packed snow, up snow covered dirt mountain roads, ice covered paved roads, etc and they are completely glued. I have been extremely impressed. They are much better than the Toyo Open Country AT3s on my 5th Gen 4Runner. They are so good in the snow that it will be tough for me to ever watch another TFL review ever again, and I have been watching them for years

I dunno man. Can't argue with results. I had a set of AT4s on thr way but that video was so compelling I canceled and went with K03s. Very glad I did

I've got AT4W (SL) and so far, they have been "good" not amazing. They aren't blizzaks and the truck is heavy. Fresh snow, cold hardpack, i have had zero issues, although around sharp corners it is still pretty easy to slide that backend a bit. I haven't been in the position to test the limit on downhill icey conditions yet.

I still have reservations about downhill on real slippery conditions. Just last night coming down the mountain in my rav4 with blizzaks I still had a few small correctable slides on very slippery corners. I would have had to be a fair bit more conservative if I was in the cruiser on the AT4Ws.

I have the AT3Ws - obviously a different tire, but meant to be better on ice - and they were truly terrible on ice. I've been a snow driver (Northern New England) my whole life, so it's not it's from a lack of experience.

Had the LC sideways and nearly in a ditch on roads I've driven many times. Switched back to Bridestone Blizzaks for winter and very glad I did so.

Yea the BFGs are cool, I have a set on my 85 CJ7. Great tire but could only get E load for the LC and they are WAY too heavy. Falkens are lighter. So I went with the Falkens

Of course they are not as good as a designated snow tire. Apples and oranges comparison. However if you want one set for year round snow, beach, highway, rain, highway. The Falkens are excellent

Agree my LC spends most of its time in Vermont so it see its fair share of snow. There is still no replacement for a designated snow tire. However if I did a designated snow in Vermont it would be studded Nokians. Ran those for years on an Audi. Best snow tire

TFL is about as unscientific as you tube can be. The few videos I have watched (back in my Raptor days) were so cringy. For anyone with a science or engineering background TFL is unwatchable….except as entertainment, and mostly to see how they completely ignore science and logic to arrive at a worthless conclusion.

*no personal experience to add regarding performance, just that the opinions you get here will be better than TFL…. Yes, strangers on the interweb are more reliable than you tube.

Listen, I've enjoyed my AT4W's. Absolutely awesome in wet. Handles nicely on the road. Reasonably quiet for an aggressive AT.

But it's not great at winter. Not terrble, but not great.

After years of abnormally warm winters, we got hit with a traditional Great White North winter this year. Thankfully, I switched to Continental IceContact XTRM's. For example, yesterday started with rain and ended up at -11 flash freezing everything into sheet ice. The Conti's have been awesome. Better on that sheet ice than the AT4W's were at the first 48-inch snow dump of the season. But yes, apples to oranges.

A closer comparison is with Michelin Cross Climate 2's. All weather. 3PMSF rated. Fantastic in the winter. As good as a second-tier winter tire. Great treadwear. Decent ride in the summer. Their weakness is 'meh' wet performance. Still better than the AT4W's in the winter.

So I wouldn't discount TFL just yet. Their results were consistent with my experience. The AT4W's aren't terrible. And if you live somewhere where you don't get much snow, or if you do it's just deep powder, then you don't really need the expense of a second set of tires. But if you live somewhere with real winter, totally worth it to get real winter tires.

You nailed it, TFL reviews are unwatchable now if you know what you are talking about. I used to like their reviews of old cars and trucks. They should stick with that instead of flawed reviews followed by sheep.

The crew at TFL don’t make any effort at all to control variables to produce valid data. Given “real world testing” can’t be done while controlling every variable I can accept a certain level of random outside variability, but TFL won’t even try to control the easy stuff that they can.

Plus they’re not using their meager testing equipment consistently from one test to another.

I’m not even a science or engineering nerd, I’m a dumbass RR locomotive throttle jockey; and even I can spot many of their inconsistencies in testing.

Yup these are in E Load but I have the Standard Load Falkens as I do not tow and wanted a softer right and OEM MPGs. The Standard Load Falkens are like only 45lbs per tire such much lighter than the BFGs.
How’s your mpg looking so far with the SL load at4w?

I'm not a fan of TFL, and I'd need to search, but TFL wasn't the only group to come to that conclusion. I don't think any of them were saying it's a bad tire in the snow, but that it's not as good as some of the closest competition. Tire Reviews for instance had it at #4 out of 5 AT tires tested for snow performance, but it was still his first choice all around AT tire.

Wasn’t impressed with the at4ws after watching Driving Sport’s vid.

Going with KO3s or the nitto terra grappler g3s once i have had enough of the cooper road + trails i currently have.
