2025 1958
If I only knew 5 days ago what I know now...

My 2025 LC1958 was stolen from the resort parking lot overnight a day ago. We were vacationing in Niagara-on-the-lake and staying at White Oaks Resort & Spa.

Parked it (literally below my room widow but 6 floors up) at 8pm and went to get coffee at 7am and it was gone. It sat in between a Lexus RX and a Tesla and head up to a Range Rover. Only one w Jersey plates though.

Police gave me the run down on how bad Toronto is w car theft, reinforced by threads here and on Reddit. Toyota trucks being #1.

Anti theft. Was worthless. App shows malfunctions and the tracking is static a mile down the road, where they probably disabled it all. Alerted Toyota connect services and they will work w the police. Broke the passenger side cargo window, based on location and tint of shards.

I put only 2,500 Mi on her and now shes on a boat to some desert.

How did they start it without keys, I thought the new Toyota key fobs were so sophisticated with all that encryption and everything, is this a truck that has major hacking vulnerabilities like Kias did some years ago?

Is this a situation where it is good to turn off the key fob transmitter after exiting the vehicle to prevent cloning? It looks like OP's key fob was likely in signal range of the LC when the theft occurred.

Here is a long thread from last year….almost the same thing. Toronto is horrible for car theft in general. He got his back eventually.

I'm sorry that my country has treated you poorly. That really sucks. I'm also really disappointed that the immobilizer didn't work. You'd think that it should have...

I haven't been to Toronto since my youth, but I hear it has become a pit of scum and villainy. I hope insurance is good to you and quick.

In Toronto the police literally recommend leaving your FOB by the front door - I’m super paranoid when I park near there. There’s a thread on immobilizers, but they seem a bit annoying to use.

I was inside on the 6th floor, but the truck was maybe 10 ft from the building. So all in all 80feet away? I don't have any idea how they got it started or moving. There was very little room to get a flatbed in there being sandwiched between 2 cars and 10-15feet from the building.

The hotel had 2 cameras above it, but for privacy reasons they said they couldn't let me see the footage in from their security room. Easter delays me talking to the Niagara police, so hopefully tomorrow I will get more info.

This is a huge question for me... Toyota works hard but thieves work harder I guess. Looking through threads all day...seems like there is electronic equipment to bypass nearly every electronic theft deterrent on any car. I am going to have to buy an old '"The Club" off facebook marketplace. Things been working for 45 yrs

Did you consider perhaps someone working at hotel is involved with the theft.

Yeah...i definitely think its a possibility. Niagara on the lake is an hour from toronto and the police said it hasn't happened much there.

Could be 100 different possible scenarios

Since talk of the 51st state and tariffs the Canadians are pissed at America. I have not been to Canada in a couple weeks. That’s not why your vehicle was lifted though. It’s been decades that the angel’s have been running this racket. It is bad in Quebec and Montreal but Ottawa and Toronto are targeted to. Yes someone from the hotel may be involved. The police you spoke with may be involved. Good luck finding it.

This really sucks dirty pond water. I hope that they can get to the bottom of it all for you.

You said a Tesla was parked nexr to it.. That Tesla has cameras filming 360 degrees. Could get that video and given it to the police..

Mine was stolen about 6 weeks ago. The LC key fob stops transmitting about 2 minutes after it sits still - apparently it has some inertial sensor in it. In my case, which is all on video, the thieves broke the drivers side window, plugged into the OBD2 port. They then left, cloned a key from the readings they took from the car. Returned 20 minutes later, climbed in through the window, started the car and drove away. Ripped the Toyota tracker out within 15 minutes, and it was gone. Police found it in Montreal 5 weeks later (after insurance settled) with a changed VIN, and Alberta plates, as it was waiting to get loaded into a ship no doubt bound for Africa.

Everyone in the know I have spoken with said the best defence is 2 fold - TAG Tracking system, and an immobilizer. Sad that the security system on a vehicle like this is so easily bypassed

Ziggy, did the TAG system help find the car ? I am asking as I also have a TAG and was wondering about the efficacity of this system.

Didn't have TAG or immobilizer. Taking delivery of a new one next week and both are the first order of business. Apparently there is over a 90% recovery on vehicles with the TAG system.

I pointed that out to hotel and police, they noted it but I don't know yet if they followed up to identify the Tesla owner
