I've seen big discussions here and other forums about what brand oil, or which sub-line within a brand, and have seen discussions/arguments over 0w20 (what the owner's manual says) vs 0w30/5w30

But I cannot find anything on 0w16 vs 0w20 - I don't know if that means "matters so little nobody bothers to talk about it" or "it is so bad/dumb that nobody bothers to talk about it".

The reason I ask is that I just took my car to the dealer for service (same dealer I purchased the car from) and looking at the receipt my oil change used 5qt "000279-BLK16-01 GTMO 0W16 BK SP WTY"

So is that a "go change it with the 0w20 asap" or "whatever, it is fine"?
I changed my oil at 1k and then at 5k (I think it was more like 1200 and 4890, but you get the idea) and live in New England, if relevant. The 1k oil change was at a non-dealer place that specializes in Toyotas - I don't have the details of what they used.

I wouldn’t risk it. If you have any engine issues, Toyota can void the warranty regardless of it is related to this or not.

I'm not an engine oil expert but the prescribed 0w20 is already so thin it shocked me. I can't even imagine the 0W16. I would take it back to the dealer and make them put in the specified type. If they balk, ask them to sign a statement taking responsibility for any issues with the engine. I bet they won't sign that and would swap the oil ASAP.

It was "free" as part of my prepaid service and even if I paid for it, the receipt says it is ~$120 (mostly labor) - so I don't even care if I have to pay, just want the right oil if it is a risk.

I think this service dept services many Tacomas, 4Runners, and Highlanders and very few LCs to date - I think up to and including mine they had only sold 3 - now I suspect they are over 10 sold, so maybe until they see it more often and learn it better they are treating it like a Highlander hybrid (I think in my searches I saw that 0w16 is ok there).

I just moved and now have a garage, so I guess could just do myself too.

Didn't want to bother with any of it if it is not a big deal, but sounds like a big enough deal that I should get resolved this week, so will start making appts. Unfortunately going to have about 300mi of driving this week prior to any chance to do anything.

BobIsTheOilGuy is an Internet forum that has many detailed threads discussing Ow16 and other similar oils. TL/DR; everyone has their own oil preferences.

Yeah I couldn't find anything there specific to the 2024 LC and that oil - I don't actually care about the oil part at all, I just want to know if my dealer's service dept should be using that when the manual does not say that.

Given they used a different oil and a different amount than what the manual says (I am pretty sure they used the spec for a Toyota Highlander 4cyl), I am just having it replaced with what the manual calls for, so doesn't matter I guess.

Went to the dealer, pointed out the 5qts and the 0w16 and said that happens to be what people do for the 4cyl Highlander but not what is in the manual for mine, so maybe the tech just spaced out.

They said that the 5qts was because they don't mark or charge for partial quarts (LC takes 5.9, so per their claim, that's nearly a full quart free) - that would be the first time I've run into a dealer where they don't charge for everything they could, but it is what they said. They also said the 0w16 is first on the list of things when the tech pulls up what to bill, so in my case they put in 0w20 but marked down 0w16 - sounds reasonable.

Said regardless, I will pay, but wanted it replaced and they said no worries, they will do that no charge.

Got back a receipt that has 0w20 on it but also now 6qts.

They very well may have just let my car sit for a bit and given me a new receipt, but whatever - moving on.
