How to repair this chip/scratch?

Found what I assume to be a rock chip/scratch when washing my LC today. Two questions:

1: does this need to be repaired or is it just cosmetic? My concern is that maybe this is bare metal and is a rust risk?
2: do I need to have this professionally repaired or is there a simple diy solution?

  1. Looks like its only primer and not the metal but if you see anything silvery then...
  2. No, but you could try touch up (tutorial). The paint code for heritage blue is 8X0 and has been on several previous toyotas incluing the FJ.

I would just hit that with a Toyota touch up pen, regardless of if it’s down to the metal or not.

It’s definitely a matte gray so I think it’s just primer!

Looks like a lot of places make a pen like touch up direct, paint 2 fix, etc… I assume this is an area where I definitely want to try and get oem from my dealer though, does Toyota make pens?

The product below has worked great for me in the past. If this is your first Toyota rock chipped paint will be a common theme, the paint seems a lot thinner then some other manufactures.

It looks to me that the bottom of the scratches are almost or just barely down to metal. IMO, most DIY color touch ups, unless you know what you're doing, are more noticeable than the original defect. If you decide to do a DIY, you might just use clear to seal the surface.

I just hit 3K miles on my LC/LC P in Underground. The miles are almost exclusively highway since I have a work car and use that during the week. I have never had a vehicle incur so many paint chips. I touched up one last week and just found two more. For what it's worth, I got a touch up pen/brush combo from Touch up Direct and think it worked fairly well, but still bothers me.

Yeah I am at 1700 miles but did 600 on a road trip and I’m positive that’s where this came from. If it keeps happening maybe I’ll ultimately have to consider getting it wrapped :(.
